One Rake
June 18th, 2016

On Thursday, June 18th the Citrus County YMCA’s Teen Camp EPIC joined the Kings Bay Rotary Club for a One Rake at a Time clean up at Hunter Springs Park. The Y’s Teen Camp EPIC, which stands for encouraging people to impact the community, brought over 40 teens to participate in the community service project. Teens involved in camp EPIC are required to participate in at least four community service projects throughout the course of the summer, as well as complete a subjective assessment in regards to what they learned about the organization they serve, and how the organization’s mission relates to the mission of the YMCA, which is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build spirit mind and body for all. Participating in Community service projects helps build an understanding in the teens about how much they take for granted, and that they are able to help their community, environment and peers by giving their time and effort to projects such as One Rake at a Time.

Rotarians who oversaw and participated in the project included Past President Art Jones, President Mike Croutch, YMCA Senior Program Director Sara Bargiel, Anthony Tamposi and David Littlejohn. The clean-up went from 9:00am until noon, and ended with a BBQ lunch provided by the YMCA. Teens seemed to really enjoy the cleanup and learning about what lyngbya is and what it does to our water ways. They also seemed very interested in coming back and participating again.

The next clean up partnership with the Citrus County Y’s Teen Camp EPIC will take place on July 2, 2015 at Hunter Springs Park beginning at 9:30am. All are encouraged to come out to help, enjoy lunch and get to know the teens from the Y.
